Dr David MW Capehorn

MB ChB (Bristol 1989) MRCGP MEWI
I graduated from the University of Bristol in 1989 and spent the initial part of my career specialising in Accident & Emergency Medicine. From a professional point of view, I spent some time as an Acting Consultant in General Accident and Emergency Medicine but my particular interest has always been Paediatric (Children's) Accident and Emergency Medicine. I continued to pursue my hospital career on a full time basis until 1994, when for family reasons, I decided I would like to train to become a General Practitioner. I first came to Kennedy Way Surgery at that stage and worked as a Registrar in General Practice for a 6 month period before returning to my hospital career as a Fellow in Paediatric and Emergency Medicine. It was at that stage I wrote a text book on the subject of Paediatric and Emergency Medicine and developed an interest in medico-legal aspects of the work. I have contributed to various other text books and provide expert evidence in civil and criminal cases.
I returned to Kennedy Way Surgery in 1996 and spent a further period as a Registrar in General Practice. Since that time I have held a Specialist post (Associate Specialist in Paediatric and Emergency Medicine) at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Bristol). I have also worked regularly within Kennedy Way Surgery as a part time General Practitioner in addition to pursuing my medico-legal career which includes regular lecturing and writing.
I joined the Practice on a full time basis as a partner in April 2001 having decided that my career in General Practice would be my base over the longer period. However, I continued to undertake part time duties as an Associate Specialist at the Children's Hospital primarily for reasons of my personal/professional satisfaction but also because I believe that in the longer term, General Practice Specialists will become increasingly common.
I am attempting to establish a Paediatric Clinic at Kennedy Way Surgery to which the other General Practitioners and health professionals will have access, in order to allow greater continuity of care for more difficult to manage paediatric problems.
Outside my work my main interest is with regard to my family. My wife originally trained as a nurse but has completed a law degree and has recently completed the professional training part of her solicitor course. We have three children, Oliver, Benjamin and Millie of whom I am immensely proud. They occupy most of my spare time but otherwise I enjoy listening to music particularly blues, in addition to playing tennis.
